"A Teachers' Workshop on Racial Justice in the Classroom"
June 22, 23, and 24, 2021 from 9 am - 3 pm via Zoom
How do we talk about race in our classrooms?
How do we recognize our own racial biases?
How do we discuss the history of race in America?
This workshop is designed for middle school and high school teachers (or pre-service teachers), seeking to begin to answer these questions.
This “Teachers’ Workshop on Racial Justice in the Classroom” is a three-day workshop providing opportunity for writing and talking about race, with practical applications for the classroom, led by veteran educators Chey Davis, Trisha Baker, and Allison Jordan. All participants in the workshop will receive copies of three books: Stamped: A Remix by Jason Reynolds, So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo, and Not Light but Fire: How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Classroom by Matthew Kay.
Teachers completing this workshop will be eligible to check out up to 30 copies of Stamped: A Remix for use in in their classrooms during the 2021-22 school year.
This workshop will take place Tuesday, June 22, Wednesday, June 23, and Thursday, June 24 from 9 am – 3 pm via Zoom. 15 SCHECHS are available. The cost is $25, which includes all three books. (SVSU College of Education students can register to attend free of charge).

"Write here, Write Now: A Port Austin Writing Retreat for Teachers"
This workshop has been rescheduled for Wednesday, June 22-Friday, June 24, 2022.
Come to the resort town of Port Austin to write in various locations with fellow teachers, exploring ways that place-based writing inspires our creativity. Friday afternoon will feature a "gallery walk" of our writing and a poetry reading for the larger community. Lodging, along with most meals, is included in the $50 fee.

The Vada B. Dow Writers' Workshop for Area Teachers
This workshop has been rescheduled for Monday, July 18-Friday, July 22, 2022.
Join us for this week-long writing workshop for K-12 teachers in all disciplines who wish to integrate best writing practices into their classroom. Featuring a workshop with Penny Kittle, and five days of writing with fiction writer John Mauk and memoirist Anne-Marie Oomen, this workshop offers teachers the ability to learn more about the craft of writing by writing themselves. Held at the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio and the Grace A. Dow Library in Midland.

If you are unable to attend the Vada B. Dow Writer's Workshop for Area Teachers, but you want to meet and learn from Penny Kittle, come to this three-hour workshop to learn more about the best practices in teaching writing. Held at the Grace A. Dow Library in Midland.
